''Umiak I'' is a purpose-built ice-strengthened bulk carrier constructed for the Voisey's Bay Nickel Company,〔 a wholly owned subsidiary of Vale Inco, to transport ore from the Voisey's Bay Mine. In open water, ''Umiak I'' can achieve a speed of with only 35% engine load.
